Ms. Barnwell read for and earned her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Guyana, where she graduated in 2013 with first class honours. Thereafter, she received her Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School, Trinidad in 2015.
Ms. Barnwell joined the team at Hughes, Fields & Stoby in 2015, having been admitted to the Guyana Bar. She is an Intellectual Property Agent with several years of experience managing the firm’s Intellectual Property Department. Her practice areas include commercial law, company law, oil and gas law, mining law, criminal law, intellectual property law, immigration law, labour law, securities law, taxation, administrative law, insurance law, aviation criminal and civil litigation. She currently heads the Immigration Practice Department and Aviation Practice Department at Hughes, Fields & Stoby. She is also a part of a dynamic team at the firm which manages high profile international mergers and aquisitions.
Ms. Barnwell has received training in the Fundamentals of Petroleum Fiscal Agreements Negotiations & Taxation as well as Compliance Training in Anti Money Laundering for Compliance Professionals from the Arthur Lok Jack Institute.
Ms. Barnwell is a trial advocate who has successfully appeared before the Caribbean Court of Justice, the country’s apex court, as well as the Court of Appeal, the High Court and Magistrates’ Court of Guyana.
She is a philanthropist at heart and is an executive member of Advocates Guyana Inc., a non-profit organization which provides pro-bono legal services to underprivileged communities throughout Guyana; a member of the Guyana Association of Women’s Lawyers, a charitable organization aimed at networking, providing pro-bono services to underprivileged communities throughout Guyana and continued legal education; a member of the marketing team of the Intellectual Property Caribbean Association, an international, non-profit organization formed to promote intellectual property rights in the Caribbean and establish a forum for better communication amongst intellectual property practitioners in the region.
